The term ‘research’ expresses about something which demands search on something again and again on a systematic and scientific way. Research is mainly dealing with data either it would be quantitative or qualitative in nature.
Therefore, we can define the research as a process where solutions to problems is found out through a planned and systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. The main intention of the research is to create something new on an area. That means it could be called a knowledge generating process.

Yes, you are right in a sense, but when a mathematician works, s/he have to use some data which might not be similar to data of social studies.

And, there is no unique definition for research, I think.

আমার ধারণা ছিল তথ্য বা পর্যবেক্ষণ ছাড়াও ‌ড়াও শধুমাত্র যুক্তির ভিত্তিতে পর্যালোচনাও গবেষণার মধ্যে পড়ে।

গণিতবিদদের গবেষণা যেরকম।
তবে এ নিয়ে মনে হয় এম্পিরিসিস্ট আর র্যাশনালিস্ট দার্শনিকদের বিরধ আছে। ঠিক জানি না অবশ্য।
